What a loss. =(
It’s a strange quirk of lemmy that we will continue to be able to see content from lemm.ee even after they’ve shut down. It’ll feel like seeing ghosts.
I’ve seen videos of some of these for honey, eggs, etc. Sometimes there’s a sort of vending machine, but often if it’s rural/small town, they can just get by with the honor system: drop money into a box, grab what you paid for.
I bought Sim City for PC at a used bookstore, and it didn’t come with the reference page for a code it would ask you for after playing a certain amount of time.
Without this code, the game would turn on all hazards (tornados, fires, flooding, Godzilla, etc) and make itself unplayable.
This must have been a common thing, because you’re the 2nd person in the comments to mention this!
It’s funny now to think that if you couldn’t figure out a game pre-internet, you just didn’t get to play it. I know that happened to me plenty.
(edit: curse you, Batman on Sega Genesis!)
I’m interested in your take on what Blue Prince and Dark Souls are echoing, if I’m reading this right.
I remember everyone gathering around the TV to see this because it was so unbelievable.
That’s a huge parenting win right there.
That’s amazing! Herbie looks to be in decent shape for what he’s been through.
Hell, chess is huge right now, and it’s over 1500 years old.
It should! It’s allowed me to play so many games that are hard to find or expensive these days.
I’ve had a successful Ironman run on Commander difficulty in XCOM 2 (WOTC), but Legendary Ironman continues to elude me. I usually get back into it once or twice each year and try again. Maybe one of these days!
This looks right up my alley. Thanks for the rec!
Those old NES games broke my fear of failure, so roguelikes, soulslikes, and similar games where you have a real chance of losing are my jam.
This also applies to games with permanent roster losses like XCOM or Darkest Dungeon. I can’t get enough.
You could do what now?
I think I also hear Castlevania and Ninja Gaiden laughing.
Not if you get it printed on a t-shirt!
It was so phenomenally stupid that the guy got turned into a meme for a while on Twitter/X.

Sometimes I forget how long it’s been!
