vscode is actually a pretty decent code editor for my needs. I use VSCodium which is basically the same thing except lacking support for a few proprietary extensions (most notably the Microsoft C/C++ extension, so I use clangd instead which for some reason was way easier to set up with copr repo on fedora than either on windows or with flathub on fedora…)

sbird@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File ExplorerEnglish2·14 hours agonot special software, but it has an app that lets you log in on win and mac. On Linux, I was able to log in and see all the servers but when I set it as proxy it didn’t work :( I might try again later
edit: Clash Verge is supported by the VPN, but I thought there was no Linux app (turns out there is!) and it works fine! Hooray!
sbird@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File ExplorerEnglish1·18 days agoI mean all I’m using is Steam, adding them as “non-steam games”. I’ve also found some game art to make it look nice. For me at least, I haven’t run into any issues besides at one point one of my games was missing a few shaders causing it to render improperly (I forgot to move the files from my Windows installation, but after I did everything worked!)
It wasn’t difficult to install at all! I just installed steam (for fedora you need to make sure you enable third-party repos when furst installing the OS) and that’s basically it. I’ve also installed Wine manually (not very hard, just “sudo dnf install wine” on fedora) to run a few non-game programs like some compiled .exe programs I made a few years ago by running “wine [program name]”. It’s crazy how simple it all is now!
sbird@lemmy.worldto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Micro$oft when I try to enjoy my local drive in peaC:\English2·19 days agothat makes sense…but why is there two of them? That’s really weird. And I don’t think they want you to quit OneDrive…
Also, since they own the operating system (Windows), they could easily just sync the folders directly. (Documents, Pictures, Desktop, Music, and Videos) That’s where most people put their files in, so why not just sync that? Why move everything into a special OneDrive directory with all the issues that comes with that?

sbird@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File ExplorerEnglish1·14 hours agoA VPN. I couldn’t get V2rayA (the vpn uses v2ray, there’s a win + mac app for that specific vpn but not linux) to work. I might have to have another crack at it soon…
edit: Clash Verge (rev) works like a charm! Hooray!
sbird@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File ExplorerEnglish9·19 days agoletting AI do whatever it wants to your files is not very good…
sbird@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File ExplorerEnglish231·19 days agopossible issues:
- blurred a part of the photo that shouldn’t be blurred, data loss
- erased the wrong object, data loss
- deleted large chunks of content in my docs/ppts/spreadsheets I wanted to keep, data loss
This is a really bad idea
sbird@lemmy.worldto Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft is putting AI actions into the Windows File ExplorerEnglish3·19 days agoI’m not missing anything, even games run fine with Wine/Proton. Also, a lot of the Linux games a really fun! (I personally enjoy Xonotic and SuperTuxKart. I also like to play custom roms with mgba) The only thing I’m missing is pretty much ONE really niche network program thing which didn’t have a Linux version. Everything else either has a Linux version, is a Windows game that can be run with Wine, or has some Linux alternative (think inkscape, kdenlive, okular)
sbird@lemmy.worldto Programmer Humor@programming.dev•Micro$oft when I try to enjoy my local drive in peaC:\English20·19 days agoWhy MIcrosoft can’t develop a good desktop app when they have a huge amount of money and loads of staff. Not to mention owning the operating system a majority of people use, meaning the app, syncing, backing up, etc. can be super optimised for it without any fuss for using workarounds. NO MS, PUTTING ALL MY FILES INTO A “OneDrive” FOLDER IS NOT A GOOD IDEA. WHY IS THERE TWO OF THEM??? “OneDrive” and “OneDrive - [org name]”??? WHAT??? AND YOUR TASKBAR ICON THING FOR ONEDRIVE IS ANNOYING. WHY CAN’T I QUIT ONEDRIVE WITHOUT OPENING THE MENU???
Thankfully I switched to more competent cloud providers. pCloud is pretty good, they just sync your files. No stupid “moving all your folders into a pcloud folder and making two of them one of which is empty for some reason”. Super duper simple. And pcloud definitely has many times less budget and staff than MS. Jottacloud is also great, pretty similar to pcloud in that it only syncs files. WHY ARE THESE MUCH SMALLER COMPANIES DOING A WAY BETTER JOB THAN MS???
as a recent linux “convert” running fedora workstation, it works fantastic :D
