“… slightly earlier than they otherwise would have.”
If I understand correctly, this is like the “daylight savings causes heart attacks” phenomenon. Yes, the rate of heart attacks increases following the time change, but this period is followed by a equivalent decrease in the rate of heart attacks. Daylight savings isn’t increasing the total number of heart attacks, just causing a few of them to occur earlier.
Likewise, the solar activity isn’t taking out operational satellites, it’s just accelerating reentry for those which were already in the process of deorbiting.
Still an interesting academic paper and findings, but the title of the news article is a bit misleading. I guess they thought Tracking Reentries of Starlink Satellites During the Rising Phase of Solar Cycle 25 wouldn’t get enough clicks.
threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.worksto Space@mander.xyz•A 'Crazy Idea' About Pluto Was Just Confirmed in a Scientific FirstEnglish6·3 days agoNow, new observations using the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) taken in 2022 and 2023, show that Pluto’s atmosphere is completely different from any other one in the Solar System.
For one thing, it contains haze particles that rise and fall as they are heated and cooled.
Pluto’s atmosphere is a complicated haze of nitrogen, methane, and carbon monoxide. Based on the JWST data, the haze particles control the energy balance of the atmosphere as they heat up and cool off. That’s very unusual and hasn’t been seen in other solar system worlds.

threelonmusketeers@sh.itjust.worksto Space@mander.xyz•Key building block for life discovered in planet-forming diskEnglish1·3 days agoWhile astronomers have found evidence for other more complex molecules in planet-forming disks around other stars, this latest discovery is the first time that rare isotopes of methanol have been detected.
The phys org article doesn’t specify which isotopes.
Edit: It’s carbon 13 and deuterium:
In addition to CH3OH, we detect 13CH3OH for the first time in a Class II disk, revealing a factor of three enhancement of 13C in the disk large organics. A tentative detection of CH2DOH is also reported, resulting in a D/H of 1%–2%, which is consistent with the expected deuterium enhancement from the low-temperature CH3OH formation in molecular clouds and with the deuteration of CH3OH measured in comets.

pretty hands-off
Given that the single admin @[email protected] hasn’t been active in two years, yeah, I’d say that counts as “pretty hands-off”. The SDF organization as a whole will probably be around for decades to come, but they don’t seem to care that much about their Lemmy instance.

Aren’t most admins this way?

Neat. It seems like Helium-3 is one of the only materials that might make sense to ship back from the Moon, given how rare it is on Earth. Still bloody expensive, but maybe, just maybe, economically viable.
